Riddles in the Dark.

What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes
And yet never grows?

Answer: Mountain

Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.

Answer: Wind

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

Answer: Darkness

Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking.

Answer: Fish

This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town
And beats high mountain down.

Answer: Time

A box without hinges, key, or lid,
Yet golden treasure inside is hid.

Answer: Egg

No legs lay on one-leg, two-legs sat near on three-legs, four legs got some.

Answer: Fish on a little table, a man at table sitting on a stool while the cat has the bones.

Thirty white horses on a red hill,
First they champ,
Then they stamp,
Then they stand still.

Answer: Teeth

An eye in a blue face
Saw an eye in a green face.
"That eye is like to this eye"
Said the first eye,
"But in low place
Not in high place."

Answer: Sun on the daisies

The beginning of eternity
The end of time and space
The beginning of every end,
And the end of every place.

Answer: The letter E

Quotation.

Life is a song, so live the music.

If love is the answer, could you rephrase the question?

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

A true friend is one who thinks you're still a good egg even though you're slightly cracked.

Be mindful when fighting monsters; lest you become one.

There is never nothing going on. There are no ordinary moments.

Death isn't sad. The sad thing is: most people don't live at all.

Life is a mystery; don't waste time figuring it out.

Nebuchadnezzar.

For the past three days, I've watched the entire Matrix Trilogy - consisting of The Matrix, The Matrix: Reloaded & The Matrix: Revolutions.

I watched all these films a long time ago, yet there wasn't a single moment where I wasn't hanging off the edge of my seat. No lie. If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend that you do so - though your brain might take some time to process the complex story-line; I know mine did!

Heck, I even learnt a few new words along the way. Quintessential, concordantly, pertinent, inexorable, vagaries and insipid are the least of them. Let's just say they speak grammatically perfect, with only slight uses of slang.

Ergo, I have come to a conclusion:

I need to get myself a suit and shades.

About the Melbourne Holiday Post, it's a work in-progress and it should be up pretty soon.

Hohoho.

Thursday, 25 December 2008 - It's that time of year again. It's Christmas!

First off, a Merry Christmas to all my readers!

I know technically it's Boxing Day but really, it's the gesture that counts - am I right? A Happy Boxing Day to everyone as well.

I didn't actually get anything for Christmas this year. Guess Santa put me on the Naughty List this year. Thanks, Santa.

Though I did get a few things this holiday season.

This year, I had turkey for the first time in my entire fifteen years and nine months. Yeah, I know. Wow, right? Seeing as it was my first time, I took the liberty of savoring it long enough to make a comparison to the other bird I've been eating all my life: chicken.

Turkey is obviously a lot less fattier than chicken, thus is more lean and the healthier alternative. The texture is pretty much the same, but most of it isn't as soft as chicken flesh (it's it not having a lot of fat). Plus turkey's a whole lot bigger, which means the servings are far more larger. And apparently, there's a technique to carve the turkey - as said by the lady at the restaurant carving the turkey.

I basically spent Christmas day and Boxing day with my uncle, aunt and cousins from Beijing. They've finally come back to visit, and it's good to see them again.

About the Melbourne Holiday Post, I'm still working on it - it's long; really long.

Listen.

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

I just had to say it.

17.12.2008

Wednesday, 17 December 2008 - The small gathering of acquaintances. Well, more of a reunion actually and the meeting of a new friend.

The pictures are courtesy of Joanne Lim, of course.

Click: here

So anyway, the outing was at Sunway - to be exact, Sunway Pyramid.

Ellya and I reached there at around 10:35, I think? No one was here yet; well no one involved in our outing. Figures.

It was quite crowded for a weekday morning, come to think of it. Ellya and I went around leaning on railings, seating on chairs, walking into shops waiting. Soon, Xin You arrived.

Ellya really wanted to watch Twilight (don't tell me you haven't heard of it), but the only shows were at 11:00 and the next one at 3:30. She wasn't going to wait for the 3:30 show. So Ellya and Xin You went off to the movies. I was supposed to follow but nah, I decided to them some alone time.

I began wandering about the mall for about half an hour or so.

Then, I got a call from Joanne. She just arrived and was still in the carpark! We agreed to meet at Starbucks Coffee. So went over the the one underneath the Pyramid, you know at the large entrance drop-off place? After not seeing anyone who looked like a "Joanne" for about five minutes, I got another call from her.

Apparently, there are two Starbucks Coffee in Sunway Pyramid - I never knew.

I told her to stay where she was and I'd go look for the other coffee outlet. Then I had to traverse across three floors (going both up and down), look at three directories (they only show outlets on their respective floors) just to get there.

As I was approaching the place, I wanted to try something really cool that I've never actually done before. I wanted to sneak up behind her (well, not right behind her but within sight) and sms her, "Turn around." It's so Eagle Eye, I know.

I already had the phone in my hand. Now, all I had to do was find her.

Then suddenly out of nowhere, a high-pitched voice that screams innocence cried, "BERNARD SAM!"

I turned around and there I saw Joanne running towards me. I chuckled and said her name back. She hugged me and I hugged back. It was great meeting her again - and we had the whole day to catch up!

We both really needed something to eat. We didn't breakfast and it was turning twelve soon. Hana and Chris would be coming later at 1:30. I called Johnathan and he said he would be there by 11:35. I looked at my watch and it read 11:39. I informed him, then he said 11:55.

Terribly sorry Johnathan, but we had no time to lose - and we were starving.

Joanne chose, Subway. I've never eaten there before and I was willing to try. Joanne says they're really good! So off we went to look for a Subway restaurant.

We found one eventually on the Lower Ground2 floor. I've never exactly stepped inside a Subway before, so I wasn't exactly sure of what or how to order the meals. Joanne let me go first 'cause I think she already had something in mind for herself.

First, you choose the type of bread. I really couldn't decide, so the guy recommended the Parmesan Oregano. Next up, the meats. I went for the Tuna Sandwich. They put some cheese over it before melting the cheese. Then, the vegie bits - loads of lettuce and onions for me. Finally, the guy asked for which sauces I would like. I never thought tuna and sauces could go together, but oh what the heck. I chose the mayonnaise and barbecue sauces. I went for the Value Meal, which included a regular drink and chips!

Joanne was right behind me. Strangely, there weren't many people in here. When I was waiting for my order to be done, Joanne had just reached Step 2 - Meats. She told me she would usually go for the Chicken Teriyaki, but she wanted something different this time. So she asked for the Turkey. Apparently, they provide two types of turkey: Turkey Breast and Turkey Ham. Joanne almost instantly ordered the Turkey Breast, and she kept elaborating it!

Before Joanne could reach the counter, I ordered her a drink and told the man manning the cashier I'd be paying for the lot.

I took our orders and Joanne went to to drink counter to get our drinks filled. We sat over at one of those side-tables where the seats were stuck to the wall and obviously look more comfortable than the regular seats which were not stuck to the walls.

When I ordered the chips, I thought they were french fries-chips. They weren't. They were in fact potato chips-chips. Weird.

We used this time to catch up - before this, we haven't seen each other for months. Then suddenly Joanne took out her SLR. Woa, where'd that monster of a camera come from; lenses and all?! From her handbag. How'd that fit in there? Anyway, she started taking pictures of me eating; I never knew I looked that eating.

As were finishing our meals, I got a call from Johnathan. He was already here but he was with his friends, so he wouldn't be able to meet us at Subway. It was 12:15.

A few moments later, he called again. He said his friends ditched him and he was free to come to subway. Joanne and I cheered! Soon after, he found his way here and he bought himself lunch. We all had a couple of laughs and catching up all around.

Right after, we decided to walk around and find out what we could do while waiting for the movie (or Hana and Chris). We had ice-skating and bowling in mind. Then we went to MPH to read a little to help burn the time.

We found the most amazing book ever. Lose Weight! Get Laid! Find God!: The All-In-One Life Planner.

Buy this book.

Sure it's a little too mature, but man you have to admit it's funny. I assure you, you will laugh your pants off.

Johnathan and I were considering on buying it, but we had other matters to attend to.

It was going to be 1:15 soon, so we went to the movies to buy the tickets first. The line for the ticketing counter was massively long.

So in the line, we had a huge discussion (which you could say at the loudness we were at, that everyone there was involved in) about what movie to watch. We were still very far from the counter. Joanne wanted to call Hana and/or Chris to find out what they would like to watch and where they were. Apparently only one of us had signal - only Joanne had signal.

Then Joanne went out of the line to make the call. Johnathan assured her that she'll be able to make it back in. After the call, she just walked in. He was right! I guess the world isn't as mean as you think it might be.

Very soon, Hana and Chris walked up to us in line. We exchanged greetings and they hopped in line. Before this I have never met Chris. He's from Joanne's new school, see. From the moment we shook hands, I could tell we'd be friends for a long time.

So anyway, we all agreed on watching Transporter 3. Then I saw the screen - it was rated 18SG. Dang.

Johnathan just told all of us to keep quiet. We could make it. We walked up to the counter and no one spoke. I broke the silence by asking for five tickets for the movie (Ellya said she wouldn't be watching with us). The unfriendly man said, "Eighteen." I was like, "Oh, then could we have five tickets for The Day the Earth Stood Still, please?" He was very unclear on where we would be seating and which seats were available or unavailable. So anyway, I saw the only five yellow coloured squares and thanked him. He smiled - I was probably the first friendly guy he'd met for the day.

Johnathan said we would've made it if I had jut kept my mouth shut. I have a pretty kiddy voice, strangely. Haha! So begins the sarcastic remarks from both Johnathan and I throughout the outing.

The movie would be starting at 3:00 and we had time to spare. Everyone was here, and we met up with Ellya & Xin You. Johnathan really wanted to skate, so the ice-skating rink was our first stop. We lost Ellya and Xin You on the way there - they must've wanted some alone time. *wink wink.

Johnathan desperately wanted to ice-skate, really bad. All of us, weren't really feeling it. After trying to decide whether or not we should skate, eventually we went off to the bowling alleys. There was a competition going on over there - we could see players wearing shirts with MALAYSIA and SINGAPORE on them. Even so, there were still empty alleys here and there.

We went to the counter (gosh, I've typed counter a number of times already, haven't I?) and the lady told us that the alleys were all full. Pft, yeah right.

Then, archery popped up in my mind. I remembered seeing an archery range somewhere around, so I brought it up. We all agreed and went out of the place. Then, right outside to the left was the archery range. Didn't notice it on the way in.

We bought this package giving all of us 30 arrows each. I think during this time we had accumulated the most photos for the outing - the link is at the very beginning of this blog post.

Not shown in the photos, was Johnathan's screen. One of his shots had impaled the camera. The screen went black partially and lost colour. I shot an arrow right above the camera blocking the view on my C rings - and that's were all my shots were! In the end, I had five bullseyes, five instances where two or more arrows were shot in the same bit of the board and four arrows shot out of the board. Interesting, no?

Right after, Ellya and Xin You dropped by and bought arrows of their own. Just as they were about to start, we ended and were ready to go off for the movies. Sorry, Ellie. *snicker.

We realised we still had time when we were at the cinema, so we went into the arcade. We ended up just seeing all the consoles.

Then off we went to the cinema to buy our snacks before entering Hall 4. The trailers and adverts. had already started rolling and there were loads of people inside. We quickly got to our seats which consisted of two rows with two on one and three on one. Johnathan and Hana took the bottom row while the rest of us took the three seats above.

Then The Day the Earth Stood Still began.

Here are my thoughts:

While it's a remake of a classic film, it's not for that reason that The Day the Earth Stood Still is so familiar. It's because it's simply not different enough from all the other global cataclysm/alien epics that have been produced these last 10 years, from Independence Day to The Day After Tomorrow to Transformers. It's a grand, visual effects heavy retread chock full of stock characters that have appeared in all of those aforementioned movies (the military brass, the government official, the frazzled scientists, the kid, etc.).

Reeves may not be the Klaatu that generations have known and loved, but he does a more than serviceable job playing a character who slowly but surely finds compassion. It's one of his better performances in awhile - though I really did love his performance in The Matrix Trilogy. Connelly is the glue that keeps this film together; she grounds this fantastical movie in reality and makes Helen both extraordinary yet relatable. Smith, who starred opposite his dad Will in The Pursuit of Happyness, proves that not all cases of showbiz nepotism are bad. He's a charming kid on-screen, and generates plenty of laughs and much pathos as Helen's troubled stepson. Jon Hamm is fine in the thankless role of the expository scientist, John Cleese makes a notable cameo as the scientist who finds himself defending the human race, but Kathy Bates seems uneasy in the role of the Secretary of Defense, as if she can't quite believe she took such a paycheck gig.

The special effects are fine, but is there really any reason why a major genre film nowadays wouldn't look good? Most of the big "money shots" were used in the trailer and the filmmakers don't get nearly as much mileage out of Gort as they could have (he is also the film's least convincing visual element). The smaller moments of Klaatu's displays of power are far more effective than the film's huge sequences of spectacle. Seeing Klaatu bring a dead man back to life or escape from a prison cell gets a bigger rise out of a viewer than seeing a wave of destruction hit a city.

While the film's environmental message is undeniably important, it is also hammered over the viewer's head to the point of inducing numbness. The film works better when it focuses on the three main characters; these are the scenes where the viewer feels most engaged. Unfortunately, Klaatu's turnabout is so abrupt that it makes the aliens look like they simply didn't do their homework before deciding to eliminate the human race. While the film makes for a decent time-passer, it's simply not out of this world enough to merit a more enthusiastic response. Of course, that doesn't mean you shouldn't watch it.

As the movie was ending, I was already running late. I had already received numerous calls and smses from my sister. My mum was already at the drop-off point. So right after: I said my goodbyes, gave a few hugs here and there, promised we'll be going together very soon again and ran off to the drop-off point.

Oh, and no. No, I didn't buy the book. I simply didn't have the time. Maybe the next time I'm around.

Patapon is extremely addictive - and pretty.

Take It In

Being down under has never felt so much like home.

It's great to be back for two weeks - it's starting to feel a bit too long actually.

I'm retracing my steps.

The post right after, which will be published either after I get back or when I manage to get more than an hour on my godparents' connection, will be about the main interesting points in the trip.

So far, I've got three days in. Everything typical most likely won't be in - I'm sure most of you have been to Melbourne and had your fair share of adventures.

Still can't stop thinking about WSS - some really wicked memories there.

Wishing you were here.

For Far Too Long

My flight leaves tomorrow at midnight - 0005, to be exact. And I haven't even started packing yet.

I would just like to wish everyone a super Happy Holidays! and safe travels to wherever you may be swept to this season.

Don't worry, I'll be back for Christmas. I should touch-down back in Malaysia on the 14th. So prepare for Christmas wishes from me!

And expect photos from me when I get back. Hopefully, I'll have enough time to take a picture or two.

Also, a massive Good Luck! to Cempaka's Choir team for Wednesday's Christmas Carol Singing event!

Wow, I haven't been home in years. Melbourne, here I come.

UPDATE: I've finally gotten my bags packed and right now, I'm really just waiting for the cab to arrive at 9:30 p.m - it's 3:57 right now, if you're wondering.

Almost no one's online at the moment; well, at least the people I usually talk to. Quite odd to think that I have 44 contacts online and yet I'm not talking to a single one of them. I'll be starting a conversation definitely right after this.

I just finished Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and the new teaser trailer for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves pops up. To think I bought the game just four days ago.

Don't get me wrong though - Uncharted is one helluva game: it won't let you down.

So this is me finishing up the last blog post you'll see on this blog for the next eleven days. Three in one day though, that's got to be a new record.

Well another five & a half hours until the cab arrives. Maybe I'll go start up Gears of War on the PC or something - a movie probably?

The Production Post is right below this one.

Just Give It Some Thought.

Sunday, November 23 2008 - I really didn't expect it. I didn't even see it coming.

I cried my eyes out.

Thing is, almost everyone did. I wouldn't blame them though. Seeing as how we've been together through those long months, how could you? With the production now over we'll barely see any of the cast, orchestra members or crew anymore. It was inevitable.

The Cast Party can't come any sooner.

This production itself has left many scars upon us, both good and bad - both literally and metaphorically. I was actually surprised I myself didn't get cramps throughout the event. I'm super susceptible to cramps, just so you know.

Through it all, all of us became closer and formed bonds with one another. Heck, I even got to know a few people I've never even met before.

I simply feel grateful to work with such an amazing bunch of cast, crew, orchestra members and teachers. Thanks to everyone who made this production possible.

We've been through many up's and down's through these months - who'll forget the performance where we started dropping like flies. We've all caught the same bug that's been going around, but that really shows how much determination we really have to drive this production to the top - and more importantly how close we truly are.

When one of us falls ill, the others will come to aid. You'd see someone massaging someone's head, or or someone having like therapy. You'd notice some lucky sick person being pampered like he was at some sort of spa even. Guess we could double-up as a spa facility after the production. Go figure.

We even have massage trains (it's these long lines of people who massage the person in front)! Word of advice: In front rules, behind smules.

One cool thing was the nicknames we had.

I'm Uncle Eight (or Uncle Bernard/UB) to the little numbers - dang, they're adorable. We have this little family of ours, each with their own parents and relatives and such [if you haven't guessed already, I'm the fun uncle].

On the first public show I was just standing backstage waiting for the overture to play, then suddenly out of nowhere the little numbers shouted, "Good Luck, UB!" and had a group hug - with me in the middle. Gosh, it warmed my heart. I didn't expect it at all and it was just so nice, you know?

I've gotten really close to some of the people I barely knew, even. Look at Tyen and I: at first we were barely talking, then right now everyday back stage we would walk up to any random girl and start bombarding the corniest, cheesiest pick-up lines you could ever think of. For obvious reasons, I will not post them here. I repeat, "I will not post them here." Apparently, we're both very cheesy and corny.

Other than the people, I think I'm really going to miss the music - yes, the music.

I think I've already mentioned the orchestra is amazing:

"There's that whole factor when you get goosebumps - that you can't force, you can't fake it.

Once I was sitting down with the orchestra, they were playing the theme from The Pirates of the Caribbean. Then the music started building to a crescendo. I looked down at my arm and actually caught myself getting goosebumps. And that says a lot."

But really, the music this time has so many different feels to them - and they're catchy too. You've got songs that instill a sense of hatred, songs that are just plain whacko, and some that make you just wanna smile. They're a plenty, I'll give you that.

I mean, don't you just want to shout MAMBO, again?

And who'd forget:

"Budak, budak, budak gila. Relax lah! Ada rocket dalam pocket? Relax lah!"

- The unofficical B.M. dub of Cool.

There were these instances where the whole company would get together, and just sit down for a discussion/or scolding. And then suddenly, the teachers would say we've done a miraculous job on the rehearsal or the show. You'd really feel the sense of excitement and joy surrounding us - the sense of brotherhood that we all share together. The sense you can't force, you can't fake. It's the sense we'll keep in our hearts forever.

Dang, I'm really going to miss all this.

Just give it some thought.

Prom Night '08

That was exhilarating/amazing/lovely/& masquerade-y.

All at the same time.

In short, prom was a memorable experience and from this first prom - you can tell it won't be my last.

The performances were truly lovely, with love songs all around. It was quite romantic, you know?

There was all sort of dancing: slow dancing, random dancing, West Side Story dancing (Muhaimin's Step, I'm looking at you), the good 'ol party dancing, some weird sort of long train-dancing thing, plain whacko dancing & competitive dancing (as in we form a circle and people just start pushing one another in to a dance showdown).

The emcees were as funny and spontaneous as ever; Julian and Daryl, amazing job guys.

The Grand Ballroom was amazingly decorated; roses, balloons, candles, the whole she-bam. The tables were lovely, the food exquisite if I do say so myself. The only problem about the venue: it was smack in the city where all the traffic jams reside - and oh, it was raining. Joy.

Ellya and I had to walk part of the way there. Parents couldn't even drive to the front of the place. Figures.

The problem was nobody kept their masks on the entire time - except maybe Muhaimin.

Now don't get me wrong, it was a magnificent night, but I feel it would have been so much nicer if I didn't have to go alone.

UPDATE: Oh, and the free ticket? Well, it didn't exactly go to waste. I gave it to Joshua so he wouldn't have to burn 150 in one night.

Would've been nice if I could've given it to a girl though - sorry Josh, I'm definitely not insulting your femininity; just saying you're not a girl [well, at least not my type] is all. Totally no offence.

The Production Post will be up next, promise.

By Golly.

Dance Workshops aren't like walks in the park

- but then again it's not like a rugby match either.

And it's only Day 1.

UPDATE: It's already ended and it's been a pretty amazing run. This dance workshop's been tough, yeah, but super beneficial - and freaking tiring. I've learnt so much that I can apply into movement (dance or rather).

Made even more friends, seeing an old one and I even had three more days to spend with some production crew members.

Though I'm just happy I can finally just lie in bed and sleep through the day. I need some well-deserved rest, I do.

UPDATE: Prom's tomorrow, my very first too. Wonder what it's going to be like.

I'm dateless, for now. Thing is, I have an extra ticket. I only recall paying for one ticket and I even have the receipt - and the ticket itself!

See, for some reason apparently under my name is an already-paid-for ticket.

Could it be some miscommunication problem between the organisers? Or maybe someone out there bought a ticket for me? I'll never know.

"So do I get to keep it? I mean, technically I didn't pay for it."
"I guess so, yeah."
"Cool! :D"

Gives you that feeling.

This Is Home.

By Switchfoot

I've got my memories,
Always inside of me,
But I can't go back,
Back to how it was,
I believe you now,
I've come too far,
No I can't go back,
Back to how it was,
Created for a place,
I've never known.

This is home,
Now I'm finally,
Where I belong,
Where I belong,
Yeah, this is home,
I've been searching,
For a place of my own,
Now I've found it,
Maybe this is home,
Yeah, this is home.

Belief over misery,
I've seen the enemy,
And I won't go back,
Back to how it was.

And I got my heart,
Set on what happens next,
I got my eyes wide,
It's not over yet,
We are miracles,
And we're not alone.

This is home,
Now I'm finally,
Where I belong,
Where I belong,
Yeah, this is home,
I've been searching,
For a place of my own,
Now I've found it,
Maybe this is home,
Yeah, this is home.

And now after all,
My searching,
After all my questions,
I'm gonna call it home,
I got a brand new mindset,
I can finally see,
The sunset,
I'm gonna call it home.

Home, this is home,
Now I'm finally,
Where I belong,
Where I belong,
Yeah, this is home,
I've been searching,
For a place of my own,
Now I've found it,
Maybe this is home,
Yeah, this is home.

Now I know,
Yeah, this is home.

I've come too far,
And I won't go back.

Yeah, this is home.

You'd understand.

I woke up this morning and there was a freaking hole in my freaking ceiling and freaking roof - freaking freakishly freaky.

Oh, and that shiny bit's the freaking sun.

Sweet.

Morning Assembly. We have it twice a week, if not on Wednesdays then Fridays. It's usually pretty routine - clearing, announcements, school song, checking.

It's just today, clearing's slightly more interesting for me.

Top floor, last classroom. Last guy on the floor comes walking straight down the corridor. I let him know morning assembly's about to start, he insists he puts his bag in the classroom first. Of course, I let the guy pass - I mean, I think anyone who's made it up to the top floor with his/her bag deserves to put it down in a safe, convenient place. Obviously.

Plus he did already make it all the way here, might as well do what he came up here for and let him go down for morning assembly. He does seem quite trustable, that guy.

So anyway, I followed the guy into the class - just in case. He puts his bag down and walks out, just as he says right? So as he walks out I mutter, "Sweet". You know, cause he listened and the day was starting out pretty fine. He turns around and says, "Oh, right. Sorry." Then he goes and spits a sweet into the rubbish-bin.

Mind you, sweets aren't allowed here in Cempaka Cheras.

I merely chuckled and said thank you. But man, the guy probably thinks I'm psychic. Sure as heck made my day.

Bleugh.

I hate being sick - the state of which I'm currently in.

Sure you get to stay home, sleep in, access an untapped internet connection, the television all the yourself - the whole house to yourself. Sounds great, doesn't it?

It's quite the opposite, really.

I feel terrible. I can't stop sneezing and coughing. And then there's the super, mega headaches coupled with the constipated nose. Plus my throat sucks. I don't even know what I'm down with.

I feel so alone.

I just want to get better - the sooner the better.

Yet.

Whadoyaknow.

Note: More photos will be published at a later date. Blogger is being terribly slow.

Saturday, 1 November 2008 - Right now, I’m in Malacca. Yup I’m typing all this in Pages at this very moment - I’m also re-watching Heroes.

Let’s just say I have loads of time and not much to do.

So what am I doing here exactly? Well I had a wedding to attend.

It’s just my dad and I in Malacca. Ellya and my mum have this dance thing going on back home. So right after my dentist appointment (darn braces are too darn tight), we began the trip. Not much to say about the journey down - I slept almost the whole way.

I’m staying at my Grandpa’s. We were supposed to leave at 6:45. We arrived there at 4:00.

I had the perfect company over the phone the whole time.

For 2 hours I tried connecting to this dumb internet connection that keeps appearing before disappearing. And when I do manage to connect to it, it dies after about a minute or so. It was incredibly annoying and it drove me crazy - nearly.

I wore my prom gear for the occasion.

The wedding was held at the Equatorial Hotel, about a 10 minute drive from where I was staying. Apparently, it’s a five-star hotel (so says Casey, my 8 year old cousin).

The deco for the wedding was astounding. Check out the photos:

I baby-sit my little (well, younger) cousins: Casey (8), Garrett (11), Colin (12), Geraldine (13). They all have these pretty witty and lame jokes. Much like me, really.

Garrett got drunk half-way through the wedding. He was all red and he kept walking into walls. Casey was basically just super hyper - running and jumping all around the place.

I met all my uncles, aunties, granduncles, grandaunties and cousins. Yup, pretty much everyone in the hall was familiar (though I just can’t remember all their names).

Through it all, Yen was teaching Ky Lynn and I how to take amazing photos with an SLR. Yen’s my 20 something year old cousin who’s been my big brother for ages now. Ky Lynn’s been one of my closest cousins since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. She’s 16. I’m sms-ing her right now, actually.

The wedding ended at 11:00. It’s 12:35 now.

Take Flight

Thursday, 23 October 2008 - The night we'll never forget. It was a night where we stood tall, together and most of all, united.

Leadership Night.

A big congratulations to all installed profects! It really was our night, and I think we were shining brightly throughout. Can't say much, other than it was an amazing event - dinner and all.

To everyone, keep an eye out when you return from your holidays back to school. You might just notice something different.

coughcoughthetiescoughcough.

Bend down, please.

Friday, 24 October 2008 - Cempaka Beat, Cempaka Cheras' percussion troupe, has practises twice a week.

Usually we would practise with the chinese drums (duh), but today we didn't. Let me explain.

We conduct our practises in the North Hall, the drums are right outside the hall if you haven't noticed. They're these big, hulking stacked up red and white things that look like pillars. Don't touch them.

The North Hall is currently under renovation for West Side Story, Cempaka's latest box-office production, so we have no access to it. In the past, we would play in the avenue when the hall wasn't available to us. Just so happens it rains after school almost everyday - and you can't expect us to lug the drums down there again.

So when this happens we would go to the Dance Studio 1 at CPAC. And that was exactly what we did.

Usually we would hit the floors or chairs and rehearse our usual patterns. We took it up a notch.

Massive Body Percussion, as you've never seen it before.

There we more than 10 of us in the room and practically all of us were playing different things. But everything mixed together and flowed so well. It was amazing.

And saying all that isn't even going to cut it.

Tuesday, 21 October 2008 - I spent the last hours of school in the school's Sick Bay - it was my first time being treated there too.

Yeah, you probably guessed it: Major Cramps.

Cempaka Cheras is one heck of a huge school. To get to pretty much anywhere you would have to walk for about 5 minutes or so - or probably climb flights of stairs. It's the latter that led me to cramps. I always knew one day climbing those stairs I'd get some sort of injury. If you've seen the stairs at Cempaka Cheras, let alone climb it, you'd definitely understand.

They brought me to the Sick Bay on a wheel-chair. They had to carry me there with all the darn stairs about. I seemed to have lost weight whenever they lifted me, and they probably suffered loads. (:

So at the Sick Bay, I just sat on the wheel-chair for about half an hour. I made a few new friends there - and realised how many people get sick in a day. Then the nurse insisted that I lie down on one of the beds and take a rest. To tell you the truth, I really didn't want to.

Right then, I felt useless. I couldn't do anything but stay in the bay. I really wanted to limp all the way to N2 and at least watch them dance - I did the same thing up Mt. Kinabalu, I can do it in Cheras. But the nurse wouldn't let me.

So after talking to some of the boys there, I did listen to the nurse and went to lie down on the bed. I just lay there, staring at the ceiling. Then when I turned to the left, on the wall were these etchings. I couldn't make out what any of them said but there were the numbers 17351 right in front of my face. And underneath it some weird symbols that looked like "lucky" or something. Odd.

So from around 2:34 I slept all the way to 3:27.

Then I really wanted to go somewhere then. Anywhere other than the bay. So I grabbed my bag and limped out - not before thanking the nurse and saying my farewells to my new friends, of course. But I had no where else to go. Going up to N2 would've been a waste of time: the practises end at 4.

So where did I go to next? The Orchestra Rehearsals.

There's that whole factor when you get goosebumps - that you can't force, you can't fake it.

Once I was sitting down with the orchestra, they were playing the theme from The Pirates of the Caribbean. Then the music started building to a crescendo. I looked down at my arm and actually caught myself getting goosebumps. And that says a lot.

Check out the Orchestra: here

Just don't mind the other miscellaneous background sounds.

A big thank you to Laura Oh for uploading the video.

Dead Space is scary and dark.

Real dark - not so much on the scary.

It's the sound design that will have you jumping out of your seat and sending shivers down your spine. Very real, freaky even.

I haven't even tried turning off the lights, turning up the volume and playing it yet - I read it'll make you wet your pants. Seriously.

Gah, my hair's way too long.

Inspirational

Don't you love the kind of songs that just put a smile on your face? The ones that just motivate you to carry on.

When you listen to them, you don't really know what sort of feeling you're exactly feeling at that moment - you feel nothing but you just can't help but smile.

You're speechless and your mind begins to wander.

Feels great, doesn't it?

Let's Get Crakin'

Can I get any more geeky?

- Ohyeah.

I haven't really bought anything (unnecessary) for almost the entire year - all for good reason.

I've been saving up for something big.

It's already the third quarter of the year and it's my time of the year. Why? Video games. Yeahyeah, I'm a fanatic (just check my e-mail, which I like note was created when I was nine not fifteen).

Plus I'm fresh out of new games for my Playstation 3. It's practically a decorative in the living room.

News-flash, my mum and dad both read my blog. Duh. So I've compiled a nice list for them to see - and anyone who's super kind and loving and awesome and caring.

These are the ones that have really caught my eye, so fellow gamers (looking at you Edward and Wei Lik) read on.

* Some of 'em aren't out yet but it pays to count down the days to their release.

1. Resistance 2 Collector's Edition - PS3 - Nov. 4
2. Dead Space - PS3 - Oct. 14
3. Fallout 3 - PC - Oct. 28
4. InFamous - PS3 - Spring 2009
5. Killzone 2 - PS3 - Feb. 2009
6. Diablo III - PC - TBA
7. Starcraft II - PC - TBA
8. Prince Persia - PS3 - Dec. 2

Oh and if you haven't already noticed, the new Macbook looks pretty snazzy.

Saturday, 18 October 2008 - First time I put on contacts. I really thought it was going to be easy and fine and dandy.

Trust me, it isn't.

I just couldn't keep my eyes open to put the contacts over my eyes. Heck, my mum and sister had to help me. We spent like over 45 minutes trying to get the darn things on.

Then went to Qayyum and Farah's open house, which was awesome. Thanks guys. (:

Played on one of the four Playstation 3's Qayyum owns, watched The Grudge. Tell you the truth, I expected the latter to be more scary. Most of the scary scenes were cheesy, I felt, with only the music bringing on all the real scares. Though the final scene was the scariest I have to say. The story's pretty dull, I mean everybody dies. What the heck?

Saw loads of familiar faces there.

Their house is like right beside a train track. You could hear and see the train pass by every so often through the trees. Pretty cool.

So I just got back and had almost an equal amount of trouble trying to get the contacts off. I was really worried I'd have to wear them for life from now on.

I got them off eventually of course, by myself. (:

Wednesday, 15 October 2008 - Right after school, it poured like mad. I don't even think mad's gonna cut it.

Just so happens I was stuck in school until 6:45.

Right after Chinese Drums, I went to the bus stop. I usually go to the guard house, but there was no means to get there dry. I'd usually just walk through the rain but I can't afford to get sick, not now - with production around the corner, the trip back home.

No one was around. For one of the first times in my life, I actually felt truly alone. And all I did was sit there - where else could I go?

Perhaps you've heard of peripheral vision. It's where you can see things at the very edge of your vision. Man, it was not a good place for that to kick in. At all.

The heavy rain made everything dark, the roof of bus stop didn't help. The eerie patter of raindrops on the zinc roof echoed with lightning bolts flaring across the sky in front of me. The thunder was so loud and sudden. I just sat there staring at the leaves floating across the flooded but shaded car park. The noises came from all around me, the heavily wooded area beside the school just staring right back at me.

It was truly a sight to behold, but I've never actually seen the bus stop this ominous before.

It's what Tigers do best.

The Greatest

Ever had a Mamma Mia inspired warm-up session?

It's fun(nay)

Imagine the N2 Roof Studio empty. Now add the Jet Boys & Girls from production. Play Mamma Mia on the radio. Watch us be inspired.

We ran across the studio, utilising all that we've learnt during the rehearsals - even some new ones we made up ourselves. We sang along too, well the bits we actually knew. Other than that we were humming really loudly and off-key. Sorry, my fault. Hee.

But the thing was, when you looked into the mirrors, you could actually imagine this being a dance in the musical. All of us being synchronised, with the different levels and the sudden jumps coupled with movements when the music's just right - it really shows the lessons we've learnt from rehearsals are starting to show even when we're not on the stage doing our routines.

It's these things that are going to stay with us forever, both in our hearts and our minds.

Mamma mia, here I go again. My my, how can I resist you?

The last person to tag you is?
Read above.

Describe the relationship between you with him.
Kung Fu. Chinese Drums. Senior. Our bodies generate heat - serious; we like thrive in cold halls.

List your 5 impressions of him.
1. Large
2. Funny
3. Friendly
4. Strong - he can carry one of those chinese drums with an arm.
5. Don't let him sit on you.

The most memorable thing that he has done to you?
High-fiving after teasing or making a joke. It's pretty serious, you'd laugh.

If he becomes your lover, you will...?
Get on a plane, make it fly into the upper reaches of the atmosphere and jump out. Sorry, KFC. I'm a heterosexual. :)

If he becomes your enemy, you will...?
Why even ask? It's never gonna happen.

If he becomes your lover, he has to improve on...?
If he ain't broke, don't fix him.

If he becomes your enemy, the reason would be...
Me shouting: "KUNG FU", "PANDA", "HIYA" or "HEEEEEEEEEEYAAA" too much. Ngee.

The most desirable thing to do for him would be...
To ask everyone to shout along with me.

The overall impression of him is...
Imagine a Panda named Kung Fu, shouts Kung Fu stuff and is named Khong Fwu. :)

How do you think the people around you would feel about you?
Sarcastic, Amiable, Sociable, Lame, Weird - I'd go on, but talking about myself's weird.

The character that best represents you would be...
I'd say Zayne Carrick.

The most ideal person you wanna be is...
Someone grown up. Though I don't mind working on that for a few more years.

Sleep

I'm never sleeping at 8:50 on a school day, ever again.

Wait, let me explain. I sleep at around 11:00 everyday. I have to wake up at 4:50 everyday. The van comes to pick us up at 5:50 everyday - well almost everyday. I arrive in school at around 7:45.

So I slept at 8:50 yesterday, and I woke up at 2:50 in the morning. I couldn't go back to sleep and I was so awake. I just kept tossing and turning. Then when I could sleep, I woke up at 5:17 all zombie-like. Not gonna happen again, mind you.

What are you waiting for? Punch someone already.

Whatever You Call It

I was taught a life-lesson from a hawker at a coffee shop today. Heh, no kidding. What I manage to pick out from the Cantonese she was speaking to me was: Fear nothing, strive forward.

Though, at the end of the whole long conversation I figured she actually meant: Start to speak Cantonese, Banana Boy. Yeah, she called me Banana Boy.

I make friends wherever I go.

Wednesday, 1 October 2008 - Yesterday. Went out for the first time this holiday - not including school - to the Curve & Ikano PowerCentre.

Now it's not that I don't appreciate the long holidays (if you call a week long), I really do - I need the break. It's just there really isn't much to do during these long periods of time. For me right now, food's the only option along with sleeping. I've read all the books I can read, I've finished all the games I can finish, I've listened to all the music I can listen to and I've drawn all the drawings I can draw.

After the only three production practises we had during this time, the holidays just seem to be nothing but boring.

Even so, MSN and Skype never get old. MSN gets rather silly, though.

Managed to find a proper attire for the prom this year - and a snazzy tie.

My first non-school tie and formal wear that I actually own. Huzzah!

I quite like it. :)

Practise

Wishing everyone out there, a Happy Hari Raya.

See you all, next week.

West Side Story's coming out fine, and I really think we're gonna reach the standard that we're all aiming for.

Good luck everyone & Cheers!

Man, I love the cha-cha scene - it's simple, slow and the music is lovely.

Been jumping over & kicking Jets in the gut, looking at you David. Dancing with a Shark girl. Yeah, I'm a rebel.

One of Us, One of Them is out and man, it's one helluva third episode.

Heroes is definitely gonna raise questions - and eyebrows.

If you haven't already noticed.

In Light Of

Monthly Tests are over, and all I can say is the papers were doable. Sorry mum but I can't promise any A's.

It's been a really busy and tiring week - and the week isn't even over yet! Monthly Tests, Production practises, chinese drums, emcee-ing, event organizing, etc.

At the Emcee Stand...
Bernard: Did you know there would be parents coming?!?
Bryna: No! Even my own mum is here!
Bernard: What in blue blazes --

Babysitting, my adorable cousins right now. They say hwello. :)

I love being able to watch them grow.

Phoebe Ly for some strange stroke of fate always seems to be partnering up with me. Take production practises for instance: Ms. Judi keeps partnering us up for both the fight scenes and the gym scene (we're dance partners for that). During the Rumble Weekend, we were mambo partners too - plus we've been emcees together. Tell you the truth, we're just friends - and all this really just supports that fact.

Oh, and she's my date for prom.

Heroes Volume 3: Villains is up. Have you seen it? If not, you're missing out. Truly, you are.

It's friggin' awesome.

The one thing I'm missing is in your eyes.

To Reach One Hundred:
It's this one.

Yeah, it's been a long time since this blog came to being on the 2nd of December way back, last year.

Right from it's conception, it's been (well, not literally) publishing posts on the life & times of Bernard Sam, your ever witty and sarcastic-filled writer, plus posts showing off his mad writing skills. Now, that's literal.

First off, wanna thank Ellya Sam & Kimberley for actually spending months (probably years) to get me to actually start up a blog. Thank you.

Then, Shermay Soon for this amazing layout. Yup, she helped add colour and variety to the layout, plus the cBox. Thank you.

Oh, and a big fat Thank you to you wonderful readers, who never cease to bug me to update and write weird comments on the Tagboard - which I appreciate, because clearly it puts a smile on my face.

And now, my other butt hurts.

Right.

I just woke up. I had a dream I was trying to catch these two undead werewolf things. One bit me on the butt. I became one.

Strangely, my butt hurts.

Things That Go Boom.

How was my day?

Like getting blown up.

And I mean that in the best way possible.

I keep getting these lovely sunsets of a blue-green shade, with one lone star glistening on the horizon.

During the tests today, there were these ominous booms erupting every so often. It lasted through the whole day, and yet none of us could figure out what was causing it. It sounded like it came from above us (though we were on the top floor), and every time it was heard it would appear as though it was getting louder & closer. Just as it gets louder it softens and fades. Then it'd repeat itself by getting much louder and more sudden.

Apparently, we weren't the only people who heard it. A Form 5 girl came up to our classroom to ask the teacher if any of us were dropping or clanging anything. I thought so too, maybe someone was hitting the window or was lifting the tables before dropping it. Thing is, it wasn't us.

When we were sitting for our Business Studies, the booms got louder and much more intense. Ms. Ellen, our invigilator at the time, went around to check out what was making all the noise. The other neighboring classrooms were surprisingly quiet. The strange fact was: the sounds were resonating from our classroom.

Ridzwan: I WANNA LIVEEE! I don't wanna die. I don't wanna die.

Vikram: Dude, is the roof like gonna fall on us?

Ms. Ellen: Shhh, I'm sure it's nothing.

Julie: Bernard, focus on the paper.

At that moment, I couldn't help but think at any time a raging fire from an explosion would engulf the entire room destroying all of us - including our test papers (Yay!). I also imagined I'd save someone from some terrible, agonizing and horrible fate. Both daydreams, didn't take place. What, it was a Business Studies test. Any young boy in his right mind would start to daydream at any chance he'd get.

At the end of the day, none of us had figured out what was the true cause of the sounds. But one can't help but wonder...

I don't get you.

To Put It Simply

Let's just say The Script's one helluva band with one amazing album. They're not brilliant, but they sure do beat the crap out of the other bunch of songs I've been listening to.

I'm hooked.

Download Worthy:
1. "The Man Who Can't Be Moved"
2. "Breakeven"
3. "We Cry"
4. "The End Where I Begin"
5. "Talk You Down"

I have this niffy souvenir from the recent Japanese Exchange Program - it was yesterday, in fact. I'm carrying it around with me on my arm and it'll probably last for about a week, maybe two. I personally think it's pretty slick. My thanks to Tasha and Melissa!

Wanna check it out? Roll up my left sleeve.

Life isn't handed to you on a silver platter.

You have to kick the guy with the platter and TAKE IT.

- Bernard Sam (17 September 2008)

Now, I'm gonna tell you about the Rumble Weekend as the previous post clearly doesn't cut it. Stick with me here.

Group Consuelo wasn't the best group around. Far from it, really. But it surely was the group that I stuck the closest with. We had an awesome team consisting of Orchestra Members, the Dance Ensemble, Main Cast/Supporting Cast & the Production Crew. We came together not having a clue of who the heck each of us were, only to leave with all of us becoming much closer than we ever could perceive.

Grace Cheng: Our Leader and the one who motivates us all the way, enchanting us with her charisma and leadership.
Gabriel Tham: Funny, big (not fat - never) dude who simply loves to ram me. He acted as a member of the Workers' Union pretty darn well. He spoke in Mandarin to pull it off.
Penny Cheong: It's her Birthday today. Happy Birthday, Penny. :)
Wong Qi-Shaun: Henchman. We acted as Stock Brokers to infiltrate a heavily populated room to get to a suspect (more on that later).
Jennifer Kwong: She's really real cute.
Edward Ting: He gets the job done. Brilliant, really.
Momoko Uchimura: Yata! Kunichiwa! Ganbatte!
Raja Rafiuddin: He's coool.
Lavinia Chloe: She's incredibly fun and has wicked ideas.
Teh Gao Jye: Ohhellyeah. :)
Nazmin Btw Mhd Nazeer: She's real friendly.
Kevin Saw: He's like the one with the planning!
Bernard Sam: Oh, he's just so awesome. ;)

I've also probably shouted CONSUELO! too many times. My voice just got lower.

Don't judge a cupcake by its icing.

CONSUELO!

The Rumble Weekend for Cempaka's latest box-office musical, West Side Story, was without a doubt amazing. Without spoiling too much for those wanting to participate next year, we had games, workshops & experiences that I'd like to think would help us bring out our "inner performer" (and train our brain to store those memorable three days in our little noggin).

I was put in group Consuelo - though I really thought I'd be getting place in team Bernardo. Odd.

Let It Rumble

Three days. Nineteen rules. No phones. No iPods. Original scores. The stakes are raised. Make no mistake, the biggest production in Cempaka is about to be made.

On a separate note, I've become the emcee for next week's Japanese Exchange Program assembly alongside my little twin sis', Ellya Sam. People actually found it cute.

We'll be welcoming students, teachers and staff from the Aichi Keisei High School, Japan.

During the rehearsals today, I probably had the most fun I've ever had during an assembly rehearsal. There was no pressure at all and everything was just so free and happy. Brilliant, really.

My throat's been really phlegm-y, if you haven't already noticed. Thanks to that, my voice has become exceedingly low.

I tell you, I've had three people come up to me asking whether I've just hit puberty.

Personally, I find it very cool (partially because most people say my voice gets too high when I start to get hyper - I have to agree; it's uncontrollable, I swear).

Let's Take A Step Back

Ever wondered what I was like as a kid? Ever wondered what I did as a kid? Ever wondered how I looked like as a kid?

Look no further. These Let's Take A Step Back posts I'll be publishing will shed some light on my fifteen years of living. Some stories may be already well-known, while some are completely unknown to most of you.

As this is the first in the series, I'll merely post a few pictures from my childhood. They're not all the pictures I have of myself, mind you. I'm sure there's more (I'm still digging through boxes and boxes of dusty things).

Oh, and just so you know. I look different at different parts of my life - if you notice in some pictures, the little small boy has almost no resemblance or none whatsoever to me. So for who's who in them, I'll leave you to decide. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Next up: My humble beginnings in Australia.
